History of Toki
Toki (known in Japan as JuJu Densetsu) is a shoot-'em-up platformer arcade game, developed and published in Japan by TAD Corporation in 1989 and published in North America by Fabtek in the same year.
The player takes the role of an enchanted ape, who, according to the plot of the game, is a victim of a global curse that turned all the inhabitants of the small jungle island, where the game is taking place, into various animals and beasts.
The goal of the game is to cross many different levels and bosses to reach the final stage and undo the curse, as well as to free the princess, by defeating the treacheous witch doctor Vookimedlo (Dr. Stark or Bashtar in some versions).
Toki (or JuJu), the player's character, is provided with several special abilities, such as spitting energy balls from his mouth, as well as with a variation of available power-ups that can be found throughout the levels. Each power-up has a different effect and assists the player in achieving the goal.
Toki quickly became popular and thus was ported to a variety of home video game consoles and home computers of the time. It was criticized by some for lacking originality and being generally slow paced, but still received high-scoring positive reviews overall.
The game did not receive a sequel, but instead was rereleased several times with slight changes in some of the versions. A new independent enhanced remake was announced in 2009 and is planned to be released sometime in 2014.
