History of Mug Smashers
Mug Smashers, a classic arcade street fighter style beat-'em-up game, was released by an Italian company Electronic Devices in 1990.
The game begins with a short story, presented in comic style, and a description of all the characters in it. After a detailed controls explanation and a demonstration of special moves, and after a brief message from "FBI director", which states that "Winners don't use drugs", the game allows the player (or two players) to jump right into action.
The goal of the game is to free the sister of the main bad guy by beating up large amounts of people who, apparently, are members of the gang of the rival character. There are several special moves at player's disposal, as well as on-screen objects that the player can pick up or use as weapons. The enemies, however, also use weapons, thus, making the game more challenging.
Mug Smashers is considered to be one of the best examples of a fighting game of the time. Filled with fluent action and pleasurable gameplay, it ranks high on various scales. It features nicely drawn graphics and a good variety of easily performable moves, as well as many available weapons and items. However, some criticize the game for its unbalanced atmosphere, as it includes various messages in the background that don't really create a desired effect.
