History of Undercover Cops
Undercover Cops was its developers' first attempt in the modern arcade beat-'em-up genre. It was released in 1992 by Irem for the arcade and by Varie in 1995 for the Super Famicom (SNES) home console.
In this video game, the player controls a selected character from several different available options. Each character has its own story and abilities, and must be played in a specific style. There is a large variety of enemies and, even though the game was inspired by Capcom's Final Fight, many of them are unique. The players can use various objects that can be found on the levels and eat small creatures like mice and frogs to restore health.
The game is notable for its detailed backgrounds and somewhat dark setting. It features crow-pecked skeletons and forces players to lose a life by being crushed by a garbage compactor, thus, Undercover Cops is a relatively gory example for its time.
It was successful and served as an inspiration for creation of a manga based on it. A large part of the team that was working on the game later on went on to form Nazca, who developed Metal Slug game series.
Undercover Cops had its own time of success and was truly notable. Despite being in the spotlight for only a brief period, it was a well-known and popular fighting game.
